Music at St. Peter's
From the Music Director, Karen Crosby
I am pleased to say that I have been at the church 20 years. I grew up in town and descend from seven generations of boat builders. My brother is the 8th generation. He has his own boat shop and I work there part-time keeping his books. Boat building is not the only legacy, however, that I am proud to claim. My maternal grandmother was the organist at the Christian Science Church in Hyannis for over 50 years. A descendant of the Mayflower, she was a wonderful role model in her piano playing.
My tenure started at St. Peter's when the Rector, whose daughter I was teaching piano, offered me a "temporary" position as the organist/choir director until a permanent music director was found. The rest, as they say, is history. Having had no background in organ, choral or liturgical music, I went hard at work to study. I took many summer courses, mostly at the Westminster Choir College, but also have participated in others. I bought the shoes, took organ lessons and now participate in local concerts as an organist. I am the Dean of our local chapter of the American Guild of Organists and also a member of the Association of Anglican Musicians. My Master of Music Degree is from the Hartt School of Music in Connecticut.
I've had the privilege of performing an extensive repertoire of chamber music and being coached by such musical luminaries as members of the Emerson String Quartet, the cellist from Beaux Arts Trio and, of course, my piano mentor and friend, Luiz de Moura Castro, just to name a few. I've performed locally as a pianist – both accompanist and soloist. I sing with the Chatham Chorale and am working to broaden my musicianship with the study of jazz.
I feel it is a privilege to be a part of St. Peter's Church where the congregation, Clergy and Vestry are so supportive of the music program. The choir continues to show an unfailing dedication to our ministry and I am grateful for the fine musicians that also make up the music program. I am truly blessed.
